Galataport Istanbul <\/strong><\/a>Marketing Manager Mehmet Bali <\/strong>and Port Director Tolga Tuncay<\/strong>, Galataport Istanbul shared with us how it has transformed through its history, culture, and modern maritime vision, as well as its future outlook. \u201cKarak\u00f6y Galataport Istanbul Has Been Revitalized\u201d<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

With Galataport, Karak\u00f6y and its surroundings have taken on a completely different look and feel, and this success has been confirmed by the \u2018Best New Development Award\u2019 received from Cannes. Could you tell us a little about Galataport?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mehmet Bali:<\/strong> To understand this change, first Galataport Istanbul <\/strong>We must return to the beginning of the project and remember our vision. The area where Galataport is located, Karak\u00f6y, is one of the most beautiful spots in Istanbul, and even in the world, for us. It is a very special place with its view of the historic peninsula, the Bosphorus, the opportunity to walk along the sea, and the rich historical architecture around it. The cultural diversity of different ethnic groups and religions living together in the area makes Karak\u00f6y even more meaningful.<\/p>\n\n\n

When we began planning the project in 2014, our goal was to reintegrate this valuable area, which had been cut off from the city due to its customs zone status, back into life. Our aim was to restore this area to city life while preserving its historical fabric. Throughout the project, we created low building heights, pedestrian-friendly squares, and streets in line with the neighborhood concept. When you walk around Galataport, you feel like you are walking in a neighborhood rather than a mega-project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, preserving historically significant structures that have been made earthquake-resistant and creating an inclusive environment were also among our primary objectives. To date, Galataport has welcomed 40 million visitors, bringing together people of all ages and languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Moving the Terminal Underground: An Inspiring Vision of Innovation\u201d<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0An innovative step was taken in creating this living space by placing the terminal building underground. How did the process progress?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tolga Tuncay:<\/strong> Karak\u00f6y was closed to the public for many years because it was a customs area. To change this, we decided to move the terminal underground. This design is a patented solution and a unique application worldwide. This allows access to the pier and reconnects the city with the sea. Our terminal area was also highly appreciated by cruise passengers during the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCruise Tourism Makes a Significant Contribution to the Economy\u201d<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Cruise tourism is of great value to both the economy and the maritime sector. What is the current status of cruise tourism at Galataport?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tolga Tuncay:<\/strong> Cruise tourism, although a relatively small segment of global tourism, is growing rapidly. This sector, which was hit hardest during the pandemic, was also one of the fastest to recover. In 2019, 30 million people took a cruise. By 2023, this number reached 31.7 million. We expect it to reach 40 million by 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n

The contribution of cruise passengers to the economy is also very important. Passengers arriving at a home port spend $400-450 per day, while transit passengers spend $100 and crew members spend $70-80. Our goal at Galataport is to increase our home port ratio and make a greater contribution to the economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2024 season has been eventful so far. The MSC Sinfonia continues its scheduled voyages even during the winter months. This is also an important step for winter tourism. Winter tourism has revitalized the typically quiet period in Istanbul between November and March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A New Era After the Pandemic<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The pandemic has also deeply affected maritime tourism. How do you think this situation has led to change in the sector?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mehmet Bali:<\/strong> People's interest in outdoor spaces increased during the pandemic. Galataport Istanbul <\/strong>This offered a significant advantage. Our visitors had the opportunity to spend time outdoors in a safe environment. Food and beverage areas, streets, and museums provided ideal spaces to meet this need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGalataport Adds Value to the City with Culture and Art\u201d<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

 What is Galataport's approach to cultural and artistic events?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mehmet Bali:<\/strong> We position Galataport not only as a port but also as a living space. Through the exhibitions, concerts, and other cultural events we organize, we aim to give everyone who visits here a sense of Istanbul's unique energy. This approach adds value to both tourism and the social life of the local community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Galataport Will Be Istanbul's Face on the World Stage\u201d<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

 What are Galataport's future goals for cruise tourism?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tolga Tuncay:<\/strong> Our goal is to make Galataport one of the Mediterranean's most important cruise destinations. To this end, we are continuing to develop our infrastructure and increasing our partnerships with global cruise companies. We aim to contribute to the city's tourism revenue by accommodating more ships and passengers. In addition, our investments to position Galataport as a lifestyle hub will continue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
