Intekmar, which produces advanced technology composite parts for the automotive industry, transferred this expertise to the yacht sector and established Momenta Yachts in 2012. The 11-meter Momenta 36 HT motor yachts, designed in-house, were launched between 2013 and 2014.
The Momenta HT model, which meets the expected demand, offers users the comfort and convenience of larger boats despite its 11-meter length, thanks to its spacious interior and ideal design. The Momenta model, available with various option packages, is manufactured using advanced composite technology as a high-performance family boat.
Developed with a lightweight sandwich body and detailed engineering work, the Momenta 36 HT stands out with its high performance, stability, comfort, and safety standards. The facility in Kocaeli Şekerpınar, which has 3000 m² of indoor and 3000 m² of outdoor space, also features a test pool capable of testing boats up to 18 meters in length.
The second boat in the series, the 36 HT, was exhibited at the 2014 CNR Eurasia Boat Show and attracted significant interest from visitors. Murat Telgeren, Project Consultant at Momenta Yachts, is a renowned figure with extensive experience in engineering, production, and marketing in composite boat manufacturing. Telgeren shared the following insights with our magazine regarding the establishment, objectives, production methods, facilities, and goals of Momenta Yachts.
Our goal is to establish a lasting presence in the global market.
“Intekmar is a company that has been producing advanced technology composite parts for the automotive industry for many years. Anticipating a potential gap in the market, our company decided to transfer its expertise to the yacht sector and launched the Momenta series motor yacht project in 2012.”
“Our design team, consisting of six members including an industrial design engineer, technical draftsman, and shipbuilding engineer, planned the Momenta series boat after a year of work. We completed our model and mold manufacturing and launched our first boat in October 2013. We launched our second boat at the beginning of February and exhibited it at the CNR Eurasia Boat Show. Our goal is to achieve sustainable quality and pricing to establish a lasting presence in the global market. We are aware that this will not happen in the short term. We believe that after an 8-10 year process, we will be among the companies with a significant share in the global market.”
The new trend in the world is high-performance family boats
“As a company, our manufacturing culture, design approaches, financial and purchasing information, and management philosophy are well-suited to support our long-term planning. There is a new trend emerging globally, with an increasing demand for day trips or weekly excursions in metropolitan areas. Doing these trips with sailboats, depending on the wind conditions, takes a lot of time, and people start to get bored. Therefore, people prefer boats that have a certain level of performance and sufficient comfort to get them where they want to go quickly. Our boats also meet the needs of this trend, defined as high-performance family boats.”
“Momenta 36 is a boat suitable for 15-day cruises as well as day trips. Thanks to the forward cabin, guest cabin, and a saloon table that converts into a bed, a family of six can comfortably enjoy more than just a weekend on our boat. Mediterranean people love open spaces. Therefore, in addition to sufficient interior volume, we tried to maintain open spaces on the boat at an optimal level. This layout is quite popular.”
Our boats are meeting the expected demand
“Our boats are meeting the demand we anticipated. Sales of the two boats we financed have been completed, and production of our third boat is continuing as part of series production. No series-produced boat of this concept has ever been made in Turkey. As Momenta Yachts, we will continue to produce boats by increasing our sizes in this concept. Following the two 36-foot boats designed for this purpose, our 44-foot boat is also in the project phase. We plan to complete the molds in 2014 and launch the first boat in the series in early 2015, presenting it to boat enthusiasts at the CNR and Düsseldorf Boat Show exhibitions.”
“Optional engine options ranging from 150 to 260 horsepower, radar, radio, GPS, fish finder, satellite antenna, bow thruster in the propulsion system, generator and air conditioning in the comfort package, and sunroof can be organized according to customer demand. Our base boat also meets the expectations of many people.
Normally, we could have obtained a CE certificate declaration. However, we chose not to do so and instead worked with the Netherlands-based ECB, one of the world's most prestigious institutions in the field of CE, to compete with ourselves. By exceeding ECB's demanding classification rules, we earned the right to obtain a B certificate.”
“We imported all the bow and side windows, the rear door, and the opening roof systems from the UK. The engines are Yanmar 150-260 horsepower twin engines. The sound insulation of the boats was meticulously done. Even at maximum speed, no vibration is felt in the cockpit. Our fire system meets high standards. The ventilation of the engine room's gel coat was all done in accordance with fire systems. The materials used in the engine room were applied to withstand temperatures of 60 degrees and equipped with an automatic fire extinguishing and alarm system. Our fuel tanks were chosen to be aluminum for both lightness and durability.”
Our lightweight boat performs well even with small engines.
“We have a rearview camera that activates when reversing to facilitate easy docking. A dynamic positioning system can be installed when desired, enabling easy maneuvering of the boat. Even non-professionals can easily perform maneuvers such as docking, undocking, and fuel transfer using a single joystick.
Fiber boats derive their quality from the mold. We have produced a mold with high surface gloss and long life using technological materials and methods. We used special pushers patented by us to ensure that the hull and other parts come out of the mold easily. Our boat has a single-hull monolithic structure underwater; therefore, repairs are easy in the event of an accident. All above-water sections feature a sandwich construction, utilizing 25-millimeter PVC foam.
“Our boat, which is lightweight yet sturdy, has a full weight of approximately 6.5 tons. With its significant lightness in its class, our boat delivers excellent performance even with small engines. Our cruising performance turned out to be quite successful as planned. On our first boat, we reached a speed of 32 knots with 260 horsepower engines. Our speed will be around 15 knots on average and 22 knots maximum with the 180 horsepower engines we offer as standard. With the most preferred 220 horsepower engines, we can reach a speed of 30 knots. Thanks to the boat's structure, it planes very easily without any strain. The boat's width and glide on the water allow for comfortable sailing in 1.5-2 meter waves without diving under the waves. Even during a full 360-degree turn, those on board can continue their activities without any discomfort.”
The fact that our boat is completely dry is a feature we take pride in.
“One of the most important features of the boat is that no water splashes onto the boat's hull. A common problem with many boats is that even those sitting in the cockpit get soaked. The fact that our boat is a dry boat is one of the features we are proud of. In our test basin at the factory, we can test sailboats and motorboats up to 18 meters in length and 3.5 meters in draft. This provides us with many conveniences. We can perform many system tests that would be difficult at sea in the basin. At sea, we only conduct sailing tests. This saves us time and speed. In the future, for exports abroad, we will be able to ship the boat after basin testing without launching it into the sea.”
We are creating serious documentation for sustainable quality.
“We place great importance on design. We use many programs such as Cutia, Autocad, Maxsurf, and Ellias. Before the equipment is mounted on the boat, all plans such as lines, routes, and cables are drawn. This allows us to see potential problems in advance and resolve them in the design. We create thorough documentation to ensure consistent quality. In addition, to maintain continuity, all holes, mounting guides, and templates on the boat are constantly updated by a two-person team, and staff are trained in this regard. This way, every boat produced will be identical to the others.”
“We also have a dedicated team for the purchasing process. We believe that in the future, we can further reduce the cost of the boat and increase our production volume, thereby boosting our sales potential.
Our boat attracted a lot of attention at the CNR Boat Show. Despite clearly displaying ”Made in Turkey" at our stand, it was perceived as an imported boat, and we faced numerous questions in this regard. We will market our boats ourselves domestically for a while. We are continuing our contacts with distributor companies for our international sales.”
