Bodrum’s yachting world is now represented by someone from within the industry at the helm of one of the city’s most important institutions, which embodies its commercial life. Erdem Ağan, a second-generation representative of Ağanlar Shipyard & Marina and a well-known figure in Bodrum’s yacht building and refit industry, has been elected the new president of the Bodrum Chamber of Commerce.
Ağan’s blue group secured a strong foundation of representation in the new administration by winning the elections in all 11 of BODTO’s professional committees. The result signifies not only a change in the chamber’s leadership but also the rise of a figure from one of Bodrum’s sectors with the strongest international connections to the center of the city’s broader commercial structure.
Ağan’s presidency opens up a new avenue for addressing the Bodrum yachting ecosystem—which he has been closely following for years—within a broader economic framework. Shipyards, marinas, refit facilities, technical service providers, suppliers, design firms, and professional service providers today form a vast, interconnected commercial network. The relationship between this structure and tourism, as well as the city’s other economic activities, is becoming increasingly evident.
Therefore, Ağan’s new role does not mean stepping away from the world of yachting. On the contrary, he is applying the experience he has gained in the field over the years to a commercial representation area that encompasses all of Bodrum. As a second-generation representative of a shipyard and marina business who has closely witnessed the transformation of the city’s maritime identity, Ağan will now bring this experience to bear on the needs of a broader business world.
Ağan, who faced off against İbrahim Akkaya in the presidential race, stated in a post-election statement that the chamber would belong to all members—whether they voted for him or not—and that they would adopt an inclusive approach to governance. The victory of the blue lists in all 11 professional committees further expanded the new administration’s representation within the chamber.
Today, Bodrum is establishing itself not only as a tourist destination but also as a center of international significance in terms of yacht construction, refit, and maritime services. The economic activity generated by this ecosystem is now extending beyond the boundaries of shipyards and marinas, becoming an integral part of the city’s overall commercial structure.
Ağan’s presidency of BODTO also takes on significance precisely at this intersection. One of the key issues for the coming period will be the extent to which Bodrum’s growing yachting and refit capacity will find common ground with the city’s other commercial dynamics. Ağan’s experience as an insider in the sector, combined with his new leadership role, offers Bodrum a fresh perspective on forging this relationship.
